SYNOPSIS
In a very quiet town, campers/ hunters disappeared without leaving any trace. A scientist tries to alert authorities about killer trees but nobody seems to believe him. A ranger who already had troubles with trees is traumatised; he tries to forget but his past comes back at him. More and more attacks happen without any explanations...REVIEW
The story itself is quite original, as killer-tree-stories are quite rare. The story has all the more impact as it takes place during the Christmas period and that, as a consequence, Christmas trees can be found in every home. However, we soon have the impression that we missed something... which is true, as it is the sequel to a movie called "TREES". Everything can be understood though in spite of the fact that I wasn't lucky enough to watch the first part of this series.Let go back to the story. In fact, there's a lack if Christmas trees and some men decide to go and steal some in a private place, surrounded with a high fence without being aware of what will happen because of them.
The movie itself is a soft kind, as we don't really see the attacks because of the peculiar way the trees from whom we see them. We then only see green light and some shadows. All that shouldn't be taken at face value, making more laugh than shiver, in spite of the fact that we can feel behind this crazy side a more serious and strong ecologic message.
The animation of the trees is quite good but they as well make more smile than anything else, with their four legs reminding the ones of spiders and they green glowing eyes.
The way the actors act is pretty good and convincing but the multiplicity of the characters doesn't really allow the viewer to care about them.
However, the general rhythm of the movie is quite slow with long scenes without great interest. The rhythm of the attacks is also quite slow in the beginning but the more the movie passes by the more the attacks are frequent due to the growing number of trees attacking. The flashback system is VERY good with black & white images with the character's narration of the events as a soundtrack. Moreover, it allows giving more information to the viewer who not has seen the prequel without it being hard to integrate in the movie.
Between the attacks, we can find fun passages including a scene where two men are stuck on a chairlift...
The lights are very good and help reinforcing the shadows on screen. However, that doesn't help making the attacks less predictable as the eyes of the trees glow.
Without revealing it, the end is both epic and humorous and seems to introduce a sequel to this movie with a "TERMINATOR" like character.
To sum up, this is not a movie that you must absolutely own but, in spite of some slow scenes, you spend a good time watching this movie. The only bad thing being that, for now, only people understanding English can truly appreciate it.
