.: REVIEW
First opus of the Takao Okawara series (who however worked on the excellent Akira Kurosawa's "KAGEMUSHA", and who would then direct "GODZILLA VS. MECHAGODZILLA II", "GODZILLA VS. DESTROYAH" and"GODZILLA 2000"), "GODZILLA ET MOTHRA : THE BATTLE FOR EARTH" is filled of clichés of all kinds...
In this episode, Japan is once again confronted to the worst natural catastrophes: meteorites, typhoons, volcanic eruption, without talking about the simultaneous awakening of three monsters ( Mothra, Battra the “Black Mothra” and Godzilla) which would, as usual, cause considerable damages to the city of Tokyo.
The scenario, inspired by the previous opus of the series, is totally ridiculous and incoherent, even making think that the writers are deliberately making fouls out of the audience. The monsters are from time to time allies and enemies; indeed, you can wonder the entire movie long about the part of Godzilla in all this... Some scenes are flagrantly inspired, and even quite insolently, of the "INDIANA JONES" series, in particular in the very beginning when the lead character steals a statuette in a cave, and a moment later, the bridge scene without talking about the discovering of the wall fresco...
The special effects are very average. If the models and the mock-up tanks were taken for incredible innovations in the 50's/60's and gave back a kind of charm to the first opuses, in 1992, we were waiting for something else...
Fortunately, the few monster fight scenes save the movie a bit.
From the actor point of view, they aren't more convincing, but their respective interpretations are details compared to the scenario!
In "GODZILLA ET MOTHRA : THE BATTLE FOR EARTH", the message is clearly ecologist. The monsters Mothra and Battra, who defend nature, attack mankind, destroyers of the environment, by the intermediary of an ancient civilisation represented by two miniature characters, the “Cosmos”, a kind of fairy with telepathic powers...

The most recent episodes of the series aren't quite able to match the previous of the 50's. Anyway, the movie still is pleasant to watch for all the Kaiju Eiga fans, without being more than an entertainment.
