.: STORY
Edward D. Wood Jr is a young director ready to do anything to take over Orson Welles. Unfortunately for him, his mediocrity prevents him from finding financings to make his projects come true. That's when he happens to meet Bela Lugosi, who everybody thought was dead, and insists on his playing the main part in his next movie.
With the means available, they'd succeed in making what is now considered as a classic movie, "PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE".
.: REVIEW
Ed Wood is known nowadays for being one of the worst directors ever in cinema history. Following on from B series lacking of talent to another, he became famous thanks to his mediocrity that entitles him with the “cult” director status. Unfortunately for him, this success will come after his death...
Tim Burton, who doesn't need to be presented anymore, decided, back in 1994, to pay a tribute to him in a biographical movie with a fun tendency which immerse us into Ed Wood's universe, incarnated excellently by Johnny Depp, at the beginning of his career. Besides him, the cast is quite impressive, as we can find Martin Landaun ("NORTH BY NORTHWEST", "CLEOPATRA", "WITHOUT WARNING"...), Sarah Jessica Parker ("FOOTLOOSE", "STRIK8ING DISTANCE", "MARS ATTACKS!"...), Patricia Arquette ("NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET PART 3 – DREAM WARRIOR", "TRUE ROMANCE", "STIGMATA", "LITTLE NICKY"...), Jeffrey Jones ("AMADEUS", "BEETLEJUICE", "THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER", "THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE", "SLEEPY HOLLOW", "STUART LITTLE"...) or also G. D. Spradlin ("THE GODFATHER PART 2", "APOCALYPSE NOW")...

In order to immerse the viewer into the mood of the era, the adventures of the director would take place in black and white, accompanied, for his first shooting, with characters as touching as heterogeneous: an ingenuous wrestler, a gothic looking TV presenter as well as an unforgettable Bela Lugosi. Such a cast, supervised by a director who likes to dress like a woman, can only make you smile.
To come up with Tim Burton's work, the score, composed by Howard Shore, really immerse us into another world.
But "ED WOOD" isn't only a funny movie; it's a moving work, in spite of the parody tone, and also a wonderful human adventure, Bela Lugosi striking up more and more a friendship with the director.
In addition to a perfect interpretation by Johnny Depp, the great surprise come with the well-known Martin Landaun in his Bela Lugosi part, nearly becoming the star of the movie.

So, "ED WOOD" is a major work in Tim Burton's career, in spite of the light subject. Filled with references, it is an homage to Edward Wood Jr., but also to Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff (whose work is denigrated back and forth by Bela the whole movie long), Orson Welles and to the past time of the old horror movies which is stressed by Bela Lugosi when saying: “They don't want classic horror movies anymore. What they want now is giant spiders, giant cockroaches.”
