.: REVIEW
In 1970, the ABC channel launched "ABC Movie of the Week" to satisfy the need of long-running movies of the audience. Steven Spielberg, then young director for TV series, was working on a long-running movie for Universal and destined to cinema: "DUEL". Unfortunately, Universal was more interested in television than cinema, and this movie would never come out in theatres but on this ABC program.

It is at this time that the career of the great Steven Spielberg began. Noticed for his excellent skills in staging, "DUEL" was extended for a release in cinemas in 1972 (first in the UK and then in Europe) and won the Great Prize of the Avoriaz fantastic film festival in 1973. We all know about what follows in his career with successes such as the "INDIANA JONES" series, "LES DENTS DE LA MER", "E.T.", "JURASSIC PARK"...

We can notice that this recognition is very well deserved when we see all the qualities of this first film. Entirely shot outdoor, with natural landscape, the quite simplistic story of DUEL" is essentially based on tension and fear. No reason is given for the hunting of the car driver by the tanker driver ; all that we know is that he wants to kill the representative at all cost ... Spielberg fuel the mystery with an unbearable suspense by hiding the face of the truck driver all the movie long, which gives the truck an almost human aspect, a kind of personification which reminds of "MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE" by Stephen King. The viewer shares the same anguishes as the character of Davis, so much that he holds his breath all the film long because of the tension, in particular during the monologue scenes in the car.

"DUEL" is one of a kind of a movie and very breath taking, which mood is particularly oppressive will captivate the audience until the very last second! An ever lasting classic where suspense and terror mix brilliantly!
