.: REVIEW
The story from the start is a bit confusing. We don't really understand what's going on due to the use of a “vision”, a dream system that quite well represents the atmosphere of drug use and alcohol abuse at the time. The fact that no French track or subtitles are proposed doesn't help the understanding of facts. However, you can feel that the film will be provocative.
Indeed, it's not only about a classic horror movie but also a psychological thriller. There's no really bloody or gory scene properly speaking, all taking place off camera that allows the viewer to imagine what's going on.
Despite the lack of bloody scenes, there are some very shocking scenes about moral. I remind you that this movie was shot in the 70's, and in spite of the sexual liberty of the time, the public wasn't, and still isn't nowadays, prepared to child abuse references, even less the one of a father towards his daughter as it is shown in the movie. Some visions that Molly has of the past are very difficult to assimilate even if, here also, all takes place off camera. We then don't understand why she defends him all the time.
The image itself is very beautiful even though we can regret the abundance of light, not matching with the dark atmosphere of the film. Let's note a very beautiful scene in negative on a raft covered with corpses, showing all the madness of the character. Let's note as well that the director of photography, Dean Cundey, worked later on numerous John Carpenter movies such as "THE FOG", "ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK", "THE THING", "HALLOWEEN"... The psychedelic atmosphere of free drugs is very well shown.
About the casting, we can find Millie Perkins who was very famous at the time for interpreting the main character in George Stevens's 1959 "JOURNAL OF ANN FRANK". The way the actors play, be them famous or not, is very convincing and we soon let ourselves driven by this strange movie quite hallucinatory on some scenes.
Though very interesting with its theme, images and actors play, we can regret that the film doesn't really seem finished. The ending is quite blurred and we still don't really know what was going on, why and how.
It is a good film though dispensable. For the sea and 70's fans.
