.: REVIEW
Second shutter of a DVD collection resulting from tele series "KAIDAN SHIN-MIMIBUKURO", series itself drawn from book "SHIN-MIMIBUKURO" of Ichiro Nakayama and Hirokatsu Kihara (a contemporary version of the anthology of ten volumes "MIMIBUKURO" of the samouraï Yasumori Negishi written under the Edo era), this edition of "TALES OF TERROR 2" is a kind of "best of" all seasons confused, composed of eight segments of approximately five minutes each one.
All the stories of the collection of "TALES OF TERROR", that is to say on the whole a hundred short films, are based on horrific tales and urban legends considered as true, being known and being told through all Japan and being compiled by the authors of the book.According to popular beliefs', all this small news touches close with the phantoms, following the example majority of horror films coming from Japan. With through these eight short films, it is a whole side of the Japanese folklore which thus reviewed, putting in scene supernatural presences haunting all kinds of places, with various intentions according to episodes'... Perhaps a proof that the world of dead and that of alive do coexist...?
To carry these stories to the screen, the task was entrusted to young ignored and promising realizers, like Akio Yoshida, but also with other sizes like Takashi Shimizu, with which one owes the series of the "JU-ON" and "THE GRUDGE", "MAREBITO" or "TOMIE : RE-BIRTH"; Norio Tsuruta, ("RINGU 0"and recent "PREMONITION") and Yudai Yamaguchi, which had carried out delirious "BATTLEFIELD BASEBALL" (Japanese response to "SHAOLIN SOCCER") and worked with Ryuhei Kitamura on "ALIVE", "VERSUS" and "DOWN TO HELL", two directors whose short films are not reproduced unfortunately on this volume.
With a average duration of five minutes per episode, difficult for the spectator really to impregnate these supernatural environments without remaining a little on its hunger... The short films prove, in addition, much less alarming than envisaged, although loans of a certain key of mystery. No the scenes gores nor same a tantinet bloody, in "TALES OF TERROR", all is in the suggestion. With the spectator thus to draw his own conclusions from them... A thing is sure, through these claimed stories with the veracity, the instigators of this project had in heart to show that reality often exceeds the fiction...Lan's rating : 5 on 10
