.: STORY
Dr Carruthers is a mad scientist who raises bats. Thanks to a proceeding he invented, he succeeds in making them taller and teaching them how to kill people..: REVIEW
Produced by the PRC (Producer Releasing Corporation), studios known for their cheap side and their low-budget Z-movies, "The Devil Bat" is considered by many like the beginning of the decline of Bela Lugosi's career. This last takes the part of the mad scientist, a character that he's get to play several times since "Murder In The Rue Morgue" in 1932, incarnating here Dr Carruthers.
Even though it's basic, the scenario really holds the road, and the evolution of the Dr Carruthers character is well led. The way that the revenge get stressed as the movie goes on keeps the watcher in suspense and the remarkable performance of our favourite ex- Dracula does most of the job.The bat, even though roughly realised, seems quite likely if we compare "The Devil Bat" to "Bats", for example, yet realised 60 years later and with many more means. Moreover, while the bat attacks in B-movies nowadays tend to make us laugh, here, we can feel the tension and fear growing a bit.
The performance of the other actors is also acceptable without being convincing. Without Bela Lugosi, "The Devil Bat" wouldn't have had the same impact. To sum up, "The Devil Bat" is a movie to have if you're a Bela Lugosi fan or if you collect the movies about bats.
