.: REVIEW
Strange is how can be qualified the story of "DEATH BED" !Directed between 1972 and 1977 by George Barry, this movie, which is the first and only of his career, was never released... Shot in 16mm, it should have been transformed in 35mm to be exploited, an investment in which nobody dare do at that time. The film was then forgotten...
Luckily, at the time George Barry was looking for a distributor for his movie, a British editor did a bootleg copy to distribute it illegally. Then, in 2000, George Barry happens to read a review about "DEATH BED" on the Lightsfade website! Surprised by the interest in his movie, he decides to get involved in this project again and to release "DEATH BED" officially, and that 25 year after its shooting!
In the cast, unknown actors for whom "DEATH BED" was their first and only movie, just like its director. Only William Russ ("AMERICAN HISTORY X") would continue his actor career.Inspired by one of the author's nightmare, this film at the limit of realism, won't fit everyone! Built as a theatre play in four acts (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and The Just Dessert), the general rhythm of the movie as a whole is quite slow. The scenes link up slowly, within which there are commentaries and memories of the narrator (a painter, victim and prisoner of the deadly bed).
In spite of all this, and a very low budget production, we can still witness good murder scenes and to beautiful sequences in the bed, stressed by remarkable blood effects. But, because it was shot in the 70's, some effects are a bit ridiculous, like, for example, the skeleton of the hands of the young guy at the end of the movie...Oh My Gore !'s rating : 5 on 10
