.: STORY
Where and how did it happen... WE DON'T KNOW.We don't know what happened, we don't know how it all began; but from one day to another, the world has become a real nightmare in apocalyptical
proportions. The whole planet was striked by an unexplainable, unthnkable and mortal hanging disease - and the deads don't die anymore. Unceasingly looking for their next meal and driven by an endless greed for fresh flesh, intiringly, some zombies pursue the few survivors.
After escaping by the skin of living deads' teeth in her Wisconsin suburbs, Ana Clarke (Sarah Polley) meets a small group of living : Kenneth, a stoic
policeman (James Weber), and the tough nut Andre (Mehki Phifer), with his pregnant wife. The heterogeneous group decides to find shelter in a shopping center, a true fortress of the XXth century.
As the outside world still falls down in a dark hell, as the growing army of the putrid zombies tries endlessly to go inside the shopping center, the survivors must not only fight against the living deads, but also one against the others and against their fears and doubts.
Isolated from the rest of the world, the shopping center inhabitants - from then one of the last bastion of humanity - must learn to live together and
to use all the resources available in their fight to stay alive, and above all, humans.
When there's no more room in heaven, the dead will walk here...
.: REVIEW
The remakes beings very much in vogue nowadays (is it a lack of inspiration of the script-writters or the will to modernize some masterpieces?), after "TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE", it's "DAWN OF THE DEAD"'s time to be back on screens, a bit more than 25 years later than the original George Romero's "DAWN OF THE DEAD". From a scenario written by James Gunn, well known for his scenario writting job for Troma ("TROMEO & JULIET") but also as an actor ("CITIZEN TOXIE : THE TOXIC AVENGER 4" and "TALES FROM THE CRAPPER"), Zack Snyder, famous director in advertissement ( lately, he was saluted in the Brtish Communication Art magazine as one of the most talented British advertissement director), directs, here, his first long-running movie.
"DAWN OF THE DEAD",, for those who have never watched it (are there still any?) must be George Romero's absolute masterpiece, a dark, apocalipytic, violent and protesting movie.Let's say that directing a remake out of it isn't an easy task, above when it is a first long-running film.
In this new grinding, there's no protesting message about society (the introduction scene could contain a certain political message, but we can wonder which is its real goal). The guideline of the movie is quite difficult to guess... We don't really understand either what's going on or why... Zack Snyder's approach is totally different from George Romero's. In fact, this movie is only a remake because of its name (and in French the name changed). The fact that the scenario doesn't keep many elements of the original movie could have added something to the remake (just like in "TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE" with the scene in the slaughterhouse which wasn't part of the original). Unfortunately, in "DAWN OF THE DEAD", it doesn't succeed and the additional elements weren't exploited enough to really add value to the movie...
The girl who appears in the beginning could have been, for example, Ana's own daugther and not her neightbour, which would have given a more see-green dimension to the story of this last one. The increased number of characters is also harmful to the general plot. Whereas, in the original, we became quite fast fond of the four unfortunate heroes, here, their part become almost unsignificant...The surprising quickness of move of the zombies ( who almost run faster than humans, in "28 DAYS LATER"'s way for the contaminated) give an obvious dynamic to the movie, at the risk, once more, not to find back the charm of the original.
However, in spite of these negative elements, "DAWN OF THE DEAD" has its own wave of magnificent scenes, especially during the first quarter of an hour of the movie. Moreover, the make-ups are really realistic and the noumerous quite gore scenes confirm that we didn't mistake the room!
Zack Snyder ends up with the honours, even if we stay far from the nightmarish, dark, anxious and apocalyptic vision of the original. "DAWN OF THE DEAD" is a very good modern horror movie if we can keep George Romero's "DAWN OF THE DEAD" out of the mind.Warning! Don't go out before the total stop of the projector!
