.: STORY
Halloween Night. The pirate radio show "American Nightmare" is broadcasting from dusk till dawn. To commemorate the massacre of four college students the year before, host Caligari has invited listeners to call in and share their worst fears.Seven friends meet for dinner before beginning the evening's festivities. With "American Nightmare" playing in the café, each one takes a turn calling the show.
But the psychopath behind last year's massacre is also listening. The friends are confessing their fears to a killer.
When the friends go their separate ways, a gruesome chase begins, with the killer using the radio show to taunt this year's prey. One by one, the seven friends become victims, manipulated by a deranged mind. And one by one the psycho will give them each a fatal chance to confront their deepest fears.
.: REVIEW
Jon Keeyes is a director that Oh My Gore! know very well and that we particularly appreciate. So after reviewing "HALLOW'S END" and "SUBURBAN NIGHTMARE", it was logic to us to watch the first thing Jon delivered to us two years ago now: "AMERICAN NIGHTMARE".
Something can be noticed first: the director and his team seem quite united, as most of the actors of this first opus would be there for the others! Brandy Little can be found in the three cast, Robert McCollum, Kimberly Grant and Hayden Tweedie also did "SUBURBAN NIGHTMARE", and finally Rebecca Stacey came back for "HALLOW'S END".To complete this cast, the director also asked for two figureheads of B series to join, Brinke Stevens and Debbie Rochon (also an egery of Troma).
Let's say that with such a cast, brought out by quite original credits, we could only expect good things to follow.
"AMERICAN NIGHTMARE"'s scenario, a priori, seems basic, and when reading it, we at once thing about one more "SCREAM"-like that horror cinema is full of. But you can only say that if you don't know about Jon Keeyes, who succeeds in making a well-done psychological thriller!Forget about pure gore or, like in Wes Craven's movie, endless enquiries to find out about the murderer. In "AMERICAN NIGHTMARE", we know at once who is guilty: Jane Toppan, wonderfully embodied by Debbie Rochon who plays her role with perfection. The quality of the movie is above all supported by her acting game more convincing than the others and above all particularly scary!
Let's not forget about Brandy Little who proves once again her acting talents and also Brinke Stevens who comes and plays a cameo, unfortunately not long enough.
However, in spite of no bloody effects, it deserves to be R-Rated because of some nude scenes (yeah, Debbie never keeps her clothes on very long when shooting :)) within which you can find one inspired by "PSYCHO".Indeed, Jon's way to direct reminds the one of Master Hitchcock, willing more to play with suspense and emotions than multiplying shocking scenes.
About the music, it fits perfectly well the whole movie, with tracks of bands like Ghoultown, The Sandblasters, Gropius, The Standards or even the Eden Automatic that we can also hear in "SUBURBAN NIGHTMARE".To sum up, "AMERICAN NIGHTMARE" may not be the movie of the century, but comparing it to all the slasher-movies that we got to see those last few years, Jon Keeyes, for his first movie, succeeds in making his way out of the pack!
