.: STORY
Death and dismemberment were the obsessions of brooding artist Richard Streeb, and his macabre paintings created a huge sensation. Until one dark night, life indeed imitated art when someone dressed in black decided to give Richard a brutal, bloody taste of his own medicine. But Richard's body has vanished and everyone is labeled a suspect, including Richard's estranged brother, Bill who begins an invesitgation of his own.
Winding through a maze of perverts, prostitutes, and psychopaths, Bill soon finds himself face-to-face with the mystery killer and the deranged motive behind the carnage. But the skin-crawling madness doesn't end there...
.: REVIEW
The Giallo, which had its glorious era some years ago with directions by Mario Bava, Dario Argento and others, is a cinematographic style that is rarer and rarer nowadays, above all in the amateur film universe. However, a year before shooting "GUILTY PLEASURES" (already reviewed on Oh My Gore!) Joseph Parda tries and imitates his Italian homologues with "5 DEAD ON THE CRIMSON CANVAS", a US small production.
By his side, we can find the famous Joe Zaso in one of his very first parts, as well as Liz Haverty who would work with him again on "GUILTY PLEASURES".
Richard Streeb is a painter who lays on canvas his most macabre thoughts, and that makes a rich man of him. He lives with his wife, Gloria, in a luxurious mansion, but an evening, after diner, he's stabbed to death with his wife watching. While the investigation is making no headway, Bill, Richard's brother, is strongly decided to discover who the murderer is...
"5 DEAD ON THE CRIMSON CANVAS", which moreover won the FANTAFESTIVAL in 1996 (winning the great prize in Italy with a Giallo is a great acknowledgement), is more than a simple homage. By conserving the codes that made of this genre one of the most popular in the 60's and 70's, Joseph Parda delivers a high quality movie, with a panting suspense, and with quite realistic gore effects.Playing with the camera just like the Italian great masters, the directors demonstrates here his wide talent, in spite of the bad quality of the images (due to super 8 shooting), and some endless dialogue scenes.
A homage movie to the golden age of Italian cinema, which, of course, isn't spectacular but which reaches its goal perfectly.
